Values

The past speaks, and belongs, to all of us. As the nation’s oldest public university, we at the Applied History Program at UGA believe in the civic values expressed by our university motto – “To teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things”-to make historical analysis accessible to our community. Through public-facing engagement, interdisciplinary analysis, and a commitment to fostering ethical dialogue, we aim to encourage and equip students, educators, businesses, and policymakers in Georgia to apply historical thinking to contemporary challenges, whether in their personal, organizational, and civic lives.

Our core values:

We are committed to:

  • Public Engagement: Serving Georgia's communities by making historical insights accessible and relevant to current needs.
  • Ethical Scholarship: Upholding the highest standards of evidence-based, nuanced, and responsible historical interpretation to earn and maintain public trust.
  • Interdisciplinary Cooperation: Leveraging collaborative methodologies—rooted in our partnership between the Department of History and SPIA—to address complex contemporary problems.
  • Civic Service: Dedicating all our work to the public good, informed citizenship, and the fulfillment of our university's mandate.
