A doctoral candidate in history at the University of Georgia, Nathanael's research melds history, economics, and political theory to explore the relationship between business, Congress, and the southern United States. His dissertation reinterprets the origins of the New Deals, tying its monetary policy to the agricultural crisis of the 1920s. His research has been published in journals such as Business History Review, and he is an active participant in the Business History and Political History Conferences.

As a member of the Applied History VIPR, Nathanael investigates the historical relationship between international trade, monetary policy, public debt, and agriculture in the 20th century.
